Building a Thriving GP Practice: Strategies for Success

On 1 June 2025, the Malaysian Medical Association Wilayah Persekutuan (MMA WP) successfully hosted a full-day seminar titled “Building a Thriving GP Practice: Strategies for Success” at AC Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The event brought together around 50 participants, comprising both young and experienced general practitioners (GPs), to discuss practical strategies for strengthening and sustaining private primary care practices.

Engaging Sessions and Expert Insights

The programme commenced with a welcome speech by Dr Selvarajah a/l Sathaya, Chairman of MMA WP, followed by a series of enriching sessions. Dr Thaneswaran a/l Marthammuthu opened the discussions with insights on “Dengue management in primary care,” while Ms Ratnawati from MARSH Insurance Broker highlighted the importance of professional indemnity in the session “Protecting Doctors When Things Go Wrong”.

Other notable sessions included:

  • “Innovative Approaches to Health Financing” by CAPBAY
  • “Building a Healthier Migrant Workforce: Strengthening FOMEMA’s Ecosystem through Panel GP Engagement” by Dr Mohd Ridzal from FOMEMA
  • “Top Tips from MPS & Record Keeping” by Dr Kalema Nadarajan and Ms Sharmini Ganasegaran from MPS
  • “E-Invoicing for GP Clinics Made Easy” by iMocha
  • “From Stethoscope to Signboard: Opening Your Own Clinic” by Dr Siti Sarah Harun, Head of Branch, CKAPS, Kuala Lumpur

These sessions provided attendees with actionable knowledge on clinic management, legal safeguards, digital solutions, and financial planning.

Active Committee Participation and Exhibitor Engagement

The event was actively moderated by MMA WP committee members, including Dr Selvarajah (Chairman), Kol Dr Gnanamalar (Vice Chairman), Dr Eratha Krishnan (Honorary Secretary), Dr Gokilavani (Honorary Treasurer), Dr Manohar Bendiah (PPS Representative), and committee members Dr Saravanan Santhirarajan, Prof Dr Victor Hoe, and Dr Mohd Basil Sulaiman.

Participants also had the opportunity to engage with exhibitors from MARSH, MPS, CAPBAY, iMocha, and MMA, who set up informative booths to support the professional needs of GPs.

Reflecting on the Way Forward

This seminar addressed practical challenges GPs faced and underscored the evolving landscape of primary care in Malaysia. Focusing on sustainability, innovation, and professional development, the event contributes meaningfully to strengthening private healthcare delivery, a crucial component of Malaysia’s health system.
